I would not recommend this to anybody who has not seen the show. Be prepared to make copies for actual use. I will warn musicians, though, that the binding does not lend itself well to staying open on a music stand. I would recommend this to anybody interested in the show's origins or who just loved it and its music. The show was such a total labor of love for Joss, and it's amazing how everybody involved shared in that love for creating something so completely new and different. Some of it I already knew, but it was still fascinating. Then I set it aside for a while, but I was happy to get back to it and read the additional material - background on the show, script and song development, reminiscences from those involved, etc. I originally bought this for the sheet music in the back, and I had fun with that immediately. Tancharoen and the Wheedon brothers make full use of their three characters, with a good mix of duets ('My Eyes'), solo numbers ('Brand New Day'), and even an extended musical sequence with an ensemble of sorts ('So They Say'). The hero (Captain Hammer) is villainous, and the villain (Dr. HORRIBLE has a much more balanced score than the BUFFY musical, which is (perhaps appropriately) ballad heavy. The contrast between standard formulas and the characters make this an instant hit. It is a typical Joss Whedon production: Irreverent, yet inciting one to thought. Since then, it has even been aired on network television. It proved to be a phenomenal sensation on the internet. This show was written, refined and produced during the writer's strike which had otherwise shut down Hollywood. Horrible was an opportunity for Joss Whedon to make a production out of love for his art, rather than satisfying the demands of other producers and the powers of Hollywood. That's entertainment!
